Stretch before or after exercise

Stretch before or after exercise?

It is generally recommended to stretch after a workout, rather than before. Here are a few reasons why:

  1. Stretching before a workout can actually reduce your muscle strength and power. When your muscles are cold, they are more likely to be injured if you stretch them too far.

  2. Stretching after a workout allows your muscles to relax and can help to reduce muscle soreness. When you stretch after a workout, your muscles are already warm and more flexible, which can make it easier to stretch them.

That being said, it's still important to do a warm-up before your workout to prepare your body for physical activity. A warm-up should gradually increase your heart rate and loosen up your muscles, but it doesn't have to involve stretching.

If you do choose to stretch before a workout, it's important to do a dynamic stretch rather than a static stretch. Dynamic stretches involve moving your body through a range of motion, while static stretches involve holding a stretch in a stationary position. Dynamic stretches are less likely to reduce your muscle strength and power.
